What are Salt and Pepper Diamonds?

Choosing a salt and pepper diamond for an engagement ring has become increasingly more popular!

They come in a wide range of shapes and colouring can vary significantly, so you’re guaranteed to have your pick of a truly one of a kind diamond to suit your individual personality. Not only are they unique and beautiful - they're also affordable, making them an excellent alternative to traditional colorless diamonds. You'll see the majority of Arsaeus Designs collection work and custom pieces include salt and pepper diamonds.

Salt and pepper diamonds are naturally occurring diamonds. They are named for the appearance black and white inclusions and color markings that can be found within the stone. These inclusions give each diamond a unique, speckled appearance - much like a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Depending on the inclusions, salt and pepper diamonds come in all sorts of natural colour varieties, making each one of a kind. Colours can range from colourless to grey, yellow, champagne, brown, to black. The level of transparency and inclusion density also plays a role and contributes to their character. They can vary from transparent to opaque, and can be milky, cloudy, icy, with distinct speckles.

A variety of cuts are available for salt and pepper diamonds. The standard practice with traditional clear diamonds is to cut them in a shape with facets to enhance their brilliance. However, with heavily included salt and pepper diamonds, the brilliance is quite reduced. Instead, salt and pepper diamonds are cut to highlight the unique patterns and inclusions in the stones. For this reason, you will see fancy cuts are common in geometric shapes.

Salt and pepper diamonds are much more affordable than traditional colourless diamonds. The beautiful inclusions that create their unique appearance are considered 'imperfections' in diamond grading to determine their value. Since colorless diamonds are evaluated based on the lack of inclusions, each inclusion in a salt and pepper diamond is seen as a 'flaw,' therefore making them more budget friendly.

Ultimately, the beauty of a salt and pepper diamond is in its very imperfection!"

I recently had my engagement and wedding rings designed and custom-made by Arsaeus. From our first consultation meeting to picking up the rings, Heather (the jeweler) was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was professional, approachable, knowledgeable, and VERY attentive to details.

It was a great experience. My girlfriend loved the ring, so much in fact that we are going back for our wedding bands.
